always dreamed of being a singer in a rock n roll band but there are reasons why certain dreams just can’t come true, in this case, I CAN'T SING! With that said, I can guarantee you that when I enter a party or event I am a Rock Star. Cameras flashing, crowd gasping in surprise, cheering, and girls fainting…Well maybe, not the fainting girls. Want to know my secret?
I’m delivering “The Cake.” My name is Grace Ugliarolo and all kidding aside the best part of cake decorating is the excitement when the client, their guests and the guest of honor see their cake for the first. As a girl, baking and cake decorating was just a simple hobby. My technique was drawing with colored frosting on a layer cake. These cakes were cute, definitely not show stoppers making anyone cry but special moments and lots of smiles were achieved...and I loved it.
Fast forward many years later when the cake competition shows started trending and I would say to myself, "I think I can do this. Can I do this? Yes, I know I can do this.”
Always thinking of it as a hobby for making my family feel special I thought I give it a try. I watched every cake show out there, took lots notes and discovered YouTube. I really started feeling confidant, and all I needed was my first subject. My oldest nephew Joseph was the chosen one and my skills were finally going to be tested.
My first cake was for Joseph’s third birthday, a Wiggle’s cake. He loved it and was so excited to the point that we weren't allowed to cut the cake. He had his parents keep it in the garage fridge, and he would go out to visit it. My brother finally threw the cake out 7 months later. We couldn’t have cake that year but I was feeling pretty good. Each birthday since then I would raise the bar and challenged my skills with successful results. Needless to say I was getting a lot of practice with the addition of two more nephews.
I guess all rock stars have that moment when they know they made it to the big time. Here was mine…at Joseph's 7th birthday a mom asked him, "What was the best part of your birthday?" He replied looking right at me with tears in his eye and said. "My Cake!" I won the grammy in that moment.
You shouldn’t be intimidated when it comes to cake decorating; even the mistakes are delicious. Your first attempts do not have to be grand elaborate creations full of fancy skills. Challenge yourself by rolling some fondant and covering a cake. Think about simple decorations like adding some fresh flowers, attaching fancy candies, maybe even finding small toys that fit your theme. I promise that first cake you put on your table or bring to a party you’ll be a Rock Star too. Happy Cake Decorating!!!
